Why Montego Bay is the right starting point for Jamaica
Montego Bay (locals call it MoBay) is Jamaica's second-largest city and the capital of St. James Parish. It is the home of Sangster International Airport, which handles the majority of international leisure flights to Jamaica, which means your Jamaica trip almost certainly starts here even if you plan to travel on to Negril or Ocho Rios.
MoBay is also a destination in its own right, and for first-time Jamaica travelers it is the easiest region to plan. The main resort corridors are concentrated between Doctor's Cave Beach in the heart of town and Rose Hall about 20 minutes east, which means short airport transfers, no mountain driving, and quick access to the biggest excursions on the island. Pair that with the island's deepest selection of all-inclusive resorts, two famous public beaches, and a lively dining and nightlife scene on the Hip Strip, and MoBay works well for honeymooners, families, groups, and solo travelers alike.

Where to stay in Montego Bay
The Montego Bay resort area is really three resort corridors, each with its own personality. Your choice depends on how much you want to leave the resort, whether you want nightlife close by, and how important short airport transfers are.
Hip Strip / Doctor's Cave
The classic central MoBay experience. Resorts and hotels line Gloucester Avenue within walking distance of Doctor's Cave Beach, restaurants, bars, and Margaritaville. Lively day and night. Best for travelers who want to be in the middle of the action.
Ironshore
Between the Hip Strip and Rose Hall. Home to several large all-inclusives and a mix of condos and villas, with easy access to both the airport (10 minutes) and the Rose Hall attractions. Beaches are mostly private resort beaches rather than public.
Rose Hall
About 20 minutes east of the airport. This is where the most luxurious MoBay resorts sit, along with championship golf courses, the famous Rose Hall Great House, and some of the island's biggest all-inclusive footprints. Quieter, more residential, with less of a walking scene.
Our quick recommendation: First-time visitors who want convenience and nightlife should pick the Hip Strip / Doctor's Cave area. Couples and families looking for a polished, self-contained resort experience should pick Rose Hall. Ironshore is the useful middle ground.

Food and nightlife in Montego Bay

Getting around and practical info
From Sangster Airport (MBJ) to your resort
MBJ is immediately adjacent to the city, so the transfer to most Montego Bay resorts is between 5 and 25 minutes. Options include pre-arranged private transfers (what we arrange for every InterStays client), resort shuttles for Sandals and other included-transfer bookings, and licensed JUTA taxis with red PP license plates. Confirm the fare and currency before you ride.
Getting around once you are there
- Taxis. JUTA (red PP plates) are the regulated option for tourists. Agree the fare before you ride.
- Resort shuttles. Many Rose Hall resorts run shuttle service to the Hip Strip and shopping centers.
- Knutsford Express. Comfortable intercity bus service connecting MoBay to Negril, Ocho Rios, and Kingston.
- Car rental. Possible but not necessary. Jamaica drives on the left and city traffic can be heavy. Most guests skip the rental.
- Walking the Hip Strip. The whole strip is walkable day and evening. Stick to lit, busy areas after dark.
Safety in Montego Bay
The resort corridors in Rose Hall, Ironshore, and along the Hip Strip are safe for the typical tourist experience day and night. As with any Caribbean city, use normal precautions: do not flash valuables, use licensed taxis after dark, and avoid walking in unlit areas late at night. Check the current US State Department advisory before you travel for the most current guidance.
Money and payments
The Jamaican dollar (JMD) is the official currency, but US dollars are widely accepted at resorts, restaurants, shops, and tour operators across Montego Bay. Change will usually come back in Jamaican dollars. Bring small US bills ($1, $5, $10) for tips, taxis, and roadside stops.
Best time to visit Montego Bay specifically
MoBay's weather follows the broader Jamaica pattern: dry and sunny from December through April, warmer and rainier from May through November, with peak hurricane risk in September. The city's position on the sheltered north coast means weather disruptions are usually brief. For the best balance of weather and price, mid-April through early June is our top recommendation, with mid-November a close second.
Montego Bay FAQs
Is Montego Bay a good choice for a first-time Jamaica trip?
Yes. Montego Bay is the easiest region to plan for a first-time visitor. The main airport is in town, so transfers are short, the resort selection is the widest on the island, and the top excursions are within easy day-trip range. Most first-time Jamaica travelers either stay in MoBay or use it as the arrival point for Negril or Ocho Rios.
How far is Montego Bay from the airport?
Sangster International (MBJ) is on the edge of town. Transfers to Hip Strip hotels take 5 to 10 minutes, Ironshore resorts 10 to 15 minutes, and Rose Hall resorts 20 to 25 minutes.
Which part of Montego Bay should I stay in?
Pick the Hip Strip / Doctor's Cave area if you want walkable restaurants, bars, and the famous public beach. Pick Rose Hall if you want polished resorts, golf, and a quieter self-contained experience. Pick Ironshore for the useful middle ground.
What is Montego Bay's main beach?
Doctor's Cave Beach is the iconic public beach, with soft sand, calm water, and chair rentals. Cornwall Beach next door is a quieter alternative. Most resort guests also use their own private resort beaches.
Is Montego Bay better than Negril or Ocho Rios?
Each has a different strength. MoBay offers the shortest airport transfer and the widest resort selection. Negril has the famous Seven Mile Beach and a more laid-back, barefoot-luxury feel. Ocho Rios has the strongest excursion access (Dunn's River, Mystic Mountain, Blue Hole) and is best for adventure-focused families. Many travelers combine two regions in a single trip.
How many days should I spend in Montego Bay?
Four to seven nights is the typical length for a Montego Bay-only trip. If you want to combine MoBay with a few days in Negril or Ocho Rios, plan 7 to 10 nights total so you have real time to enjoy both regions.
Is Montego Bay safe for tourists?
Yes, for the typical resort and excursion traveler. The resort corridors in Rose Hall, Ironshore, and along the Hip Strip are tourist-focused and well-regulated. Use standard precautions, especially after dark. Check the current US State Department advisory before you travel.
What is the best time of year to visit Montego Bay?
December through April delivers the most reliable weather. Mid-April through early June offers the best combination of weather and non-peak rates. September is cheapest but is peak hurricane season, so travel insurance is essential.
Can I do Dunn's River Falls from Montego Bay?
Yes. Dunn's River is about 90 minutes east in Ocho Rios. Most Montego Bay resorts offer full-day Dunn's River excursions, and tour operators run door-to-door packages. Build in 8 to 10 hours for the full trip.
What is the Hip Strip in Montego Bay?
The Hip Strip is Gloucester Avenue, Montego Bay's main tourist street. It runs along the waterfront in central MoBay with restaurants, bars, shops, Margaritaville, and the entrance to Doctor's Cave Beach. It is walkable, lively, and the heart of MoBay nightlife.
Which airport should I fly into for Montego Bay?
Fly into Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay. It is the main gateway for leisure travelers to Jamaica and has direct non-stop flights from most major US and Canadian cities, plus London.
