How to get to Jamaica
The two main international airports
Jamaica has two major international airports, and choosing the right one depends on where you are staying.
Sangster International (MBJ)
Located in Montego Bay. The primary gateway for leisure travelers, with direct service from most US and Canadian cities. Closest to Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios, Falmouth, and the north coast resort corridor.
Norman Manley International (KIN)
Located in Kingston. The best choice for travelers visiting Kingston, the Blue Mountains, Port Antonio, Treasure Beach, or the south coast. Has fewer direct US connections than Montego Bay.
Direct flights to Jamaica
Direct non-stop flights to Montego Bay are available from major gateways including New York (JFK), Newark, Atlanta, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Washington DC, Baltimore, Toronto, Montreal, London, and Manchester. Most US flights are between 3 and 4.5 hours. Direct Houston service is especially useful for Texas-based travelers.
Airport transfers in Jamaica
Resort transfers from both airports range from quick 10-minute runs (Montego Bay hotels close to MBJ) to 2+ hour drives (Negril or Ocho Rios from MBJ, Port Antonio from KIN). Options include:
- Private pre-arranged transfers, which InterStays arranges for every client. Flat rate, your driver meets you at arrivals.
- Resort shuttle service, included on many Sandals and other all-inclusive bookings.
- Licensed JUTA taxis, metered and regulated. Confirm the fare and currency before departing.
- Helicopter transfers, available for longer routes (MBJ to Negril or Ocho Rios) at a premium.
Travel tip: If you are headed to Negril or Port Antonio, build in extra buffer time for the drive and consider arriving by early afternoon so you reach the resort before sundown.

Jamaica has more quality resort inventory than almost any other Caribbean destination. Here is a brief overview by region. Each hotel group below links to a dedicated InterStays review page (either live now or coming in the 2027 series).
Montego Bay & Rose Hall
The widest selection of all-inclusive resorts on the island. Flagship options include Sandals Montego Bay (the original Sandals), Sandals Royal Caribbean (private offshore island, overwater villas), Half Moon (a historic Jamaican icon), Hyatt Zilara (adults) and Hyatt Ziva (family), Secrets Wild Orchid and Secrets St. James, Iberostar Grand, Round Hill Hotel & Villas, and the Jewel Grande Montego Bay. Easy MBJ access makes this region the simplest arrival for most travelers.
Negril
Known for intimate adults-only resorts and barefoot-luxury beachfront. Sandals Negril and Sandals South Coast anchor the all-inclusive end, with Couples Negril and Couples Swept Away offering couples-only alternatives. The Caves and Rockhouse are the boutique picks on the Negril cliffs. Riu Negril and Azul Beach cover the family and value segments.
Ocho Rios
Family-friendly all-inclusives and adventure-adjacent resorts. Beaches Ocho Rios is Sandals Resorts' family brand and a top pick for multi-generational trips. Sandals Ochi, Jewel Paradise Cove (adults), Jewel Dunn's River, Moon Palace Jamaica, Couples Tower Isle, Couples Sans Souci, and Hermosa Cove are all strong options depending on travel style.
Falmouth, Trelawny & Runaway Bay
Larger-footprint all-inclusives sit along this corridor, including Excellence Oyster Bay, Royalton White Sands, Royalton Blue Waters, Grand Palladium Jamaica, Riu Montego Bay, and the Melia Braco Village. Convenient to MBJ with slightly quieter beaches.
Kingston & the Blue Mountains
Business and culture-focused rather than beach-focused. Options include The Jamaica Pegasus, R Hotel, Spanish Court, Terra Nova All Suite, and the boutique Strawberry Hill in the Blue Mountains. Pair Kingston with a few days on the coast for the full Jamaica experience.
Port Antonio & South Coast
Smaller, more intimate properties. Trident Hotel, Geejam, and Hotel Mocking Bird Hill in Port Antonio. On the south coast, Jake's and the Treasure Beach guesthouse scene offer a slower, more local Jamaica.

Top things to do in Jamaica
These are the experiences we recommend booking before you land, or during your first day with your specialist. Resort-desk pricing is usually higher than booking through a trusted local operator.
- Dunn's River Falls, the iconic climb-the-waterfall experience near Ocho Rios.
- Blue Hole and Island Gully Falls, a smaller, less crowded alternative to Dunn's River.
- Rick's Cafe sunset and cliff diving, Negril.
- Luminous Lagoon, Falmouth, one of the few bioluminescent bays in the world.
- Martha Brae River rafting, a two-person bamboo raft trip through the Jamaican countryside.
- Appleton Estate Rum Tour, a half-day distillery tour in the hills above Treasure Beach.
- Blue Mountain coffee tours, starting from Kingston.
- Bob Marley Museum, his former Kingston home, now a museum.
- Mystic Mountain, bobsled, zip-line, and chairlift combo in Ocho Rios.
- Pelican Bar, a wooden bar on a sandbar a quarter mile offshore from Treasure Beach.
- YS Falls, a seven-tier waterfall in the south coast countryside.
- Reach Falls, the Port Antonio alternative to Dunn's River, usually quieter.
- Jerk trails, Boston Bay in Portland is the home of jerk; Scotchies in Montego Bay is the north coast favorite.
Food, music and culture
Jamaica's cultural reputation is deserved. The island invented reggae, popularized dancehall, and produced global icons from Bob Marley to Usain Bolt. The food scene runs from jerk pits and roadside patty shops to white-tablecloth tasting menus in Kingston. If you plan around food and music, Jamaica rewards you more than almost any other Caribbean island.
Food worth planning around
- Jerk, slow-smoked over pimento wood. Boston Bay in Portland is the birthplace.
- Ackee and saltfish, Jamaica's national dish, usually served at breakfast.
- Curry goat and oxtail, Sunday-dinner staples.
- Patties, flaky Jamaican hand pies filled with beef, chicken, or vegetables.
- Festival and bammy, traditional sides for grilled fish on the south coast.
- Red Stripe and Blue Mountain coffee, both globally recognized Jamaican exports.
Music, festivals and events
- Reggae Month every February, island-wide programming.
- Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay every July, the biggest reggae and dancehall festival in the world.
- Carnival in Kingston, typically April.
- Jamaica Food & Drink Festival, autumn in Kingston.
- Rebel Salute, a roots and culture reggae festival each January.
Practical info and honest safety guidance
Entry and documents
US, Canadian, and UK citizens need a valid passport to enter Jamaica, with at least six months of validity recommended. Most leisure travelers do not need a visa for stays under 30 to 90 days depending on nationality. Travelers must complete the Jamaica immigration C5 form online before arrival. Check Jamaica's official customs and immigration portal before you travel.
Currency and payments
The official currency is the Jamaican dollar (JMD). US dollars are widely accepted at resorts, tourist areas, and most restaurants. Expect to receive change in Jamaican dollars. Credit cards are accepted at hotels and larger restaurants, but bring small US bills for taxis, tips, excursion operators, and roadside stops.
Getting around
- Pre-arranged private transfers, the easiest option and what InterStays arranges for every client.
- Licensed JUTA taxis, red PP license plates, regulated fares.
- Route taxis, shared taxis locals use between towns, inexpensive but informal.
- Rental cars, available but Jamaica drives on the left and the roads can be challenging. Most leisure travelers skip the rental in favor of drivers.
- Knutsford Express, a comfortable intercity bus service connecting Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios, Kingston, and other hubs.
Honest safety notes
Jamaica is a safe destination for the typical resort and excursion traveler, but it is a large country with real variation. The US State Department has at times issued elevated advisories for Kingston and specific inner-city areas, which rarely overlap with resort regions. Check the current State Department advisory before you travel.
- Stay in established resort areas or use licensed drivers after dark.
- Avoid flashing valuables, cash, or expensive jewelry in public spaces.
- Use the resort safe for passports and extra cash.
- Only use licensed taxis or pre-arranged transfers; do not accept rides from unlicensed operators.
- Resort areas in Negril, Montego Bay (Rose Hall and the Hip Strip), Ocho Rios, and Port Antonio are safe for the typical tourist experience.
Health and travel insurance
Standard travel vaccines are recommended. The CDC does not require specific vaccinations for most travelers. US health insurance (including Medicare and Medicaid) typically does not cover you abroad, so travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. InterStays can bundle insurance into your trip quote.
